From Libya to Iran, passing through Syria and Iraq, the winds of war are blowing more and more fiercely. Faced with this acceleration in the clashes between imperialist powers, we communists must put forward once more with increasing insistence the only position that can allow the international proletariat to avoid being dragged into an imperialist war again, as unfortunately happened only yesterday in the terrible massacre of the Second World War and the bloodshed of the following postwar period, in which we are still immersed.

We communists are not indifferent towards the events in Venezuela, just as we are not indifferent to the social and political effects of the capitalist economy’s structural crisis, which drags on and becomes more and more profound, upsetting bourgeois alliances and alignments and aggravating the living and working conditions of the proletariat all over the world.

But our point of reference is and remains precisely that – the international proletariat, and its immediate and future interests. This is why we vigorously express our active solidarity with the Venezuelan proletarians, under attack from all quarters: by US imperialism, by the national bourgeoisie in all its various disguises (“régime” and “opposition”), by European imperialisms, as well as Chinese, Russian, and Turkish – all so many vultures hovering overhead.

The other classes decay and finally disappear in the face of Modern Industry; the proletariat is its special and essential product. Today. Great surprise has been caused by the so-called “gilets jaunes movement” (the yellow vests), arising in France in mid November, apparently out of nothing, and, reaching its peak at the beginning of December, subsequently losing momentum and potential for mobilization after the Government concessions of 10 December.

Imperialist dynamics and the Europeanist Illusion

In the post-second-world-war period, the weakness of Europe’s defeated or devastated ruling classes demanded the reconstruction of their economic, political and military apparatus.  The USA directed this reconstruction, which was warmly welcomed by the bourgeoisie in the defeated countries as the premise for renewed capitalist accumulation.  The Marshall Plan allowed national reconstruction to be launched, once the defeated had been obliged to set up an indefinable artefact called “Europe”.  In any event, it would be the “grande bourgeoisie” to install the project for “economic integration”and put it into practice in the defence of diverse national interests. The prospect of a “politically united” Europe was, instead, an illusion of the “petite bourgeoisie” in big European states, providing the “little ideals” and driven by the need for them to be widely involved in the process of capitalist development.

All over the world, proletarians are under attack. The bourgeoisie and its organs of mass disinformation maintain that “we have come through the crisis”.  Yet, disguised as precarious, unemployment grows endlessly.  The pace and conditions of work worsen constantly. The veritable mass murders of proletarians in factories, building yards, on the streets and in the fields reaches shocking figures. What is paid out on rent (if and when it’s possible to find a hole to live in!), food, gas and electricity (which, together with a roof over your head, are basic necessities!), transport (to get to work or look for it!) becomes a stranglehold.

We are not surprised by the dispatch of the one hundred missiles launched by the “coalition” of USA-Great Britain-France (after notifying Russia), to bomb the Syrian chemical plants. Our anger grows at the unceasing massacre of proletarians sacrificed in a war without end.

There is no “humanitarian intervention” today, just as there never has been in the past: this is merely a further step in the assumption of positions by the various competitors (from the USA to Russia, from France to Turkey, from Israel to Iran: and we should not marvel, if the “allies” of yesterday become the “adversaries” of today), with a view to more serious, future, inter-imperialist clashes.

There’s no need for a lot of words: only the pathetically deluded can fail to see that deep within the capitalist economy, which has been in a critical state for decades now with all its ups and downs, a new, generalized conflict is being prepared, even more devastating than the two past world wars and the infinite “minor wars” that have preceded and followed them.

The conflict is not the will of Donald Trump or Kim Jong-un (or other future puppets), even if they’re growling and flexing their muscles at the moment. Imperialist wars are not the result of the “will for power” or “homicidal folly” of one “dictator” or the other (or – worse still – of one “people” or another). They are the product of capital’s own dynamics, obliged as it is to resort to them in the attempt to get the jammed mechanism of accumulation moving again, by destroying what has been produced in excess (work-force included).

And now what will the convenient idiots do on both sides of the ocean (whatever ocean), still convinced as they are that what decides politics (domestic, foreign, economic, social, etc. etc.) is the Man (Woman) sent by Providence, elected every few years or so to the beating of drums and showers of streamers, fireworks and sequins, flag-waving, thirty-four-tooth smiles and handfuls of all sorts of promises, like sweets?

What will the prostrate do, now that the only programme that remains to them is a whining “vote the least objectionable, but vote”, thrashing about in a tormented dilemma of “what have (haven’t) we done? What should (shouldn’t) we have done?” Barely concealing a touch of rancour towards Democracy, so highly praised, by Whom they have been punished (“Ah, how ungrateful! After all we’ve done for you!”)?
